My name is Ajay Roy.

In 2014, a devastating molten-metal injury changed my life. I lost one eye completely, while my other eye and eyelids were severely damaged.

I feared not only losing my sight, but also my job, my independence and my ability to support my family.

Dr. Swapnil Bhalekar performed multiple complex surgeries and finally a keratoprosthesis surgery. Against all odds, I could see again.

I returned to my job, became independent again and could support my family.

Then, in January 2026, my keratoprosthesis developed a serious complication and had to be replaced. Once again, Dr. Bhalekar operated on me and performed a repeat keratoprosthesis.

And once again, I got my vision back.

Today, I am back to my work, my family and my life.

For me, these surgeries did not just restore my sight. They gave me my life back — twice.

I lost my vision completely due to Stevens–Johnson Syndrome and had been living in total blindness since August 2000.

For nearly 16 years, despite every effort, nothing could bring my sight back.

Then, in January 2016, I came under the care of Dr. Swapnil Bhalekar. After my treatment and complex ocular surface surgery, something happened that I had almost stopped believing was possible.

I could see again.

After years of darkness, I could see the world, the faces around me and experience life through my own eyes once again.

There are some things for which “thank you” will never feel enough.

When our son Yogesh was just two years old, we were told that restoring his vision would be extremely difficult.

His eye was unusually small, he also had a heart defect, and because of the complexity involved, corneal transplantation had been declined at several larger institutes we approached.

Then we met Dr. Swapnil Bhalekar.

He took on our little boy’s case and performed a corneal transplant when Yogesh was only two. This was followed by cataract surgery, using a specially selected small lens suitable for his tiny eye.

And slowly, our child started seeing.

Today, Yogesh is eight years old. He studies in a regular school, rides his bicycle, manages his everyday activities and enjoys his childhood like other children.

Recently, his other eye was also operated on, and he gained useful vision in that eye too.

As parents, watching our child see, learn, ride his bicycle and discover the world is something we once could only dream about.

Yogesh didn’t just receive vision.

He received the chance to live his childhood, learn independently and see the life ahead of him.

For us, he was given both — vision and a life.
