What is a cataract?
A cloudy lens, replaced with a clear one.
A cataract develops when the natural lens inside the eye gradually becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision, glare, difficulty with night driving, faded colours or frequent changes in spectacle power.
During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens, or IOL.
Modern cataract surgery is usually performed through a very small incision using phacoemulsification, with most patients returning home the same day.

Which IOL is best?
There is no “best IOL” for everyone.
The most expensive or technologically advanced lens is not automatically the right lens.
A frequent night driver may have different priorities from someone who spends the day on a computer. A person who loves reading may value near vision differently. Certain corneal or retinal conditions may also influence which lens technology is appropriate.
Our aim is therefore not to sell a particular IOL.
It is to find the IOL that best matches your eyes and the way you live.

Is cataract surgery painful?
The eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops, and sometimes a small local anaesthetic. Most people feel pressure rather than pain. Mild grittiness or watering can occur afterwards.
How long does cataract surgery take?
The operation itself is usually completed in minutes. Allow extra time for preparation, safety checks and a short recovery. Most patients go home the same day.
Which IOL is best for me?
There is no single best lens. The right IOL depends on your eyes, how you use them and what you expect after surgery. That is what the evaluation is for.
Can I become spectacle-free after cataract surgery?
Some people achieve useful freedom from glasses with premium IOLs, especially EDOF or trifocal designs. Others still need spectacles for certain tasks. We discuss this honestly before you choose.
What is a toric IOL?
A toric lens is designed to correct corneal astigmatism at the same time as the cataract is removed, so the image is less distorted at the planned focal distance.
What is the difference between EDOF and trifocal lenses?
EDOF lenses are designed for a broader range of distance and intermediate vision. Trifocal lenses add a dedicated near focus as well. Night-time rings or halos and suitability differ between designs, so the choice is individual.
Are premium IOLs suitable for everyone?
No. Corneal irregularity, ocular surface disease, macular problems and other findings can make a simpler monofocal lens the safer, clearer choice.
Can cataract come back after surgery?
The artificial lens does not become a cataract. Some people later develop clouding of the capsule behind the lens, which can be treated with a brief clinic laser (YAG capsulotomy) if needed.
