LASIK — Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis — is a laser vision correction procedure used to reduce dependence on spectacles or contact lenses.

In myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, light does not focus precisely where it should. LASIK uses an excimer laser to precisely reshape the cornea so that light can focus more accurately on the retina.

For suitable patients, the procedure is quick, recovery is generally rapid, and many people return to routine activities within a short period.

But at EYON, LASIK begins long before the laser.

It begins with understanding whether your eyes are suitable for surgery — and which treatment is most appropriate for them.

Your spectacle number tells us how much correction you need.

But it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Every cornea has its own curvature, shape and surface characteristics. This is why we believe modern refractive surgery should go beyond simply entering a spectacle prescription into a laser.

At EYON, detailed pre-operative evaluation helps us understand the shape, thickness and optical characteristics of your cornea before recommending treatment.

LASIK Personalized to the Topography of Your Cornea.

Contoura Vision is an advanced form of topography-guided laser vision correction.

Using the WaveLight Topolyzer VARIO, thousands of measurements are taken across the corneal surface to create a highly detailed topographic map unique to each eye.

The Topolyzer VARIO uses a Placido-disc system with 22 measurement rings and up to 22,000 elevation points to characterize the anterior corneal surface.

This information can then be used to plan a Contoura Vision topography-guided treatment on the WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser.

Instead of relying only on your spectacle prescription, the treatment can therefore take into account the unique surface characteristics of your cornea.

Think of it as a fingerprint for your cornea.

Standard LASIK primarily corrects refractive error — the spectacle power responsible for myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.

Contoura Vision adds another layer of personalization by incorporating detailed topographic information about the anterior surface of the cornea into treatment planning.

For an appropriate candidate, this allows treatment to be planned according to both your refractive error and your individual corneal topography.

The objective is not merely spectacle independence, but careful attention to the quality of vision after surgery.

Individual outcomes vary, and suitability must always be established through a complete refractive evaluation.

Being told “LASIK is not suitable for you” does not necessarily mean that spectacle-free vision is impossible.

It means we should explore a safer alternative.

Your eyes are numbed using anaesthetic eye drops.

The procedure is performed in our dedicated laser suite. During LASIK, a thin corneal flap is created and the underlying cornea is reshaped with the excimer laser according to the planned treatment profile. The flap is then repositioned.

The actual laser treatment itself usually lasts only seconds, although the complete procedure takes longer because positioning, alignment and safety checks are performed carefully.

Most patients go home the same day.

Immediately after LASIK, mild watering, irritation, light sensitivity or fluctuating vision can occur.

Vision commonly improves rapidly, although stabilization varies between individuals.

Modern laser technology is sophisticated, but technology does not replace clinical judgment.

Our cornea and refractive team evaluates the cornea carefully before surgery because subtle corneal abnormalities, dry eye and other risk factors can influence both safety and visual quality.

If your eyes are not suitable for LASIK, we will tell you.
